Abstract: 
Thermo chemical stability of refractory oxides under strongly reducing conditions has become recently important. In this regard, effect of various reducing conditions on stability of spinel (MgA1__2O__ 4) has been studied thermodynamically and experimentally. At 1600°C and in presence of carbon, spinel was stable in CO atmosphere, but it was reduced to alumina-rich spinel at lower partial pressure of oxygen. These results were successfully explained by the equilibrium diagrams.
