Abstract: 

Governor of a diesel-generator (DG) controls its speed by adjusting the fuel intake to the motor. Existing dynamic models for DGs do not justify some operational features, like undamped speed oscillations, of DG's speed control system. This paper introduces a modified model that takes into account these practical aspects, and investigates dynamic behavior of the closed loop speed control by the governor. After a brief comparison of PI control design methods, a method that can be tuned with minimum facilities is proposed. Then, the paper describes the architectural design and test results of a new governor featuring droop characteristic for parallel operation, blocking the fuel intake in case of over-speed, and loss of input signal protection.
