SEROLOGIC AND MOLECULAR STUDY OF AVIAN INFLUENZA SUBTYPE H9N2 IN DOMESTIC PIGEONS IN KAVAR AREA OF FARS PROVINCE, IRAN

Abstract: 
Avian influenza subtype (H9N2 ) is one of the common and disastrous diseases in industrial poultry farms of Fars province in Iran. Based on the relatively high prevalence of the disease in kavar area, 50 domestic pigeons were studied for serological analysis and virus shedding. Blood and fecal samples were collected and evaluated using HI and RT-PCR methods, respectively. The results showed that 17 serum samples (34%) had relatively an antibody titer equal or more than 2-5 against H9 N2 Avian influenza virus (AIV), but the virus genome was not detected in any of the fecal samples. According to the results, although a considerable percentage of domestic pigeons were detected to be contaminated with AIV, there is not enough evidence to prove transmission of the virus from domestic pigeons to the neighbouring poultry farms.
