Abstract:
Respiratory diseases are continuing to cause heavy economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Various pathogens have been identified to cause respiratory disease. Recently, Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale (ORT) is described to be associated with respiratory disease, growth retardation, mortality and decrease egg production. This study was carried out to indicate the seroprevalence of ORT within commercial broiler flocks in the autumn and winter of 2006 and spring of 2007 Gillan province. Twenty serum samples were taken from each broiler flock from 5 weeks of age onwards and were examined by ELISA test. Results showed that 30.44% of 20 farms were positive, 21.74% were suspect and 47.82% were negative against ORT infection. Out of a total of 460 serum samples, 238 (51/73%) were negative, 105 (22/83%) were suspect and 117 (25/14%) were positive. There was no significant correlation between antibody titers and geographic area and the presence of other diseases, but the correlation between antibody titers and age, seasons and feed convertion ratio was significant. This study indicated that prevalence of ORT antibody was very high in the commercial broiler Guilan province population.
