Abstract:

Several psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions are available for treatment of depression. Various Tricyclic antidepressants and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors as well as cognitive-behavioral and interpersonal therapy have all demonstrated to be effective to treat depressive disorders. However, complete recovery is not possible in many cases and some levels of social and occupational dysfunction remains after these treatments. Furthermore, chronic depression and persistence of some symptoms between acute episodes are quite common. As a result, some experts a many studies have shown the efficacy of dynamic psychotherapy in the treatment of depression. Its equal effect, also, has been demonstrated in some comparative studies with cognitive-behavioral therapy and some psychopharmacological treatments. Dynamic psychotherapy of depression treats subclinical as well as clinical symptoms by focusing on concepts such as narcissistic injury, self-directed rage, shame, and guilt. In this lecture, we have a brief review on practical aspects of dynamic psychotherapy for depression.
