Abstract:
During antiquity, rhetoric and grammar formed the main approaches to linguistic and stylistic studies. This essay focuses on “figures of speech” as a stylistic device and tends to shed light upon its status in ancient rhetorical and grammatical traditions. Part one is devoted to rhetoric and the taxonomy of “figures of speech” according to Greek and Roman rhetoricians. Part two is an exposition of grammatical figures according to Aelius Donatus’ Ars Grammatica, and examines the differences of these two approaches as regards the taxonomy of “figures of speech”.
