EVALUATION OF NASAL CARRIER OF STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS AND ITS RESISTANCE PATTERNS AMONG THE UNIVERSITY STAFF AND THE OUT-PATIENTS OF ACADEMIC HOSPITALS IN CITY OF BANDARABBASS

Abstract: 

Background and Objective: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the important human pathogen and the carriers are the major source of such bacterium .The aim of this study was the evaluation of resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus to variety of antibiotic.
Material and methods: During one year a total 386 samples from anterior portion of nasal cavity from 163 (42.2 )% males and 223 (57.8 )% females of 263 out patients and 123 staffs by swab cotton were collected. Then cultured on blood agar and chapman agar medium at 37
°C for 24 houres performed. The antibiotic susceptibility according to Kerbi bauer method for the antibiotics penicilin, oxacilin, cefazolin, clindamycin, cloxaciline, ciprofloxacin, ceftizoxime, vancomycin and cotrimoxazol.
Results: The results showed that 84.4%, 75%, 21.9 %were resistance to penicillin, oxacilin and cloxacilin respectively, while were 100 %sensitive to cefazolin and vancomycin. In general the resistance patterns of out patients were similar to the staffs. There was no difference between antibiotic resistance patterns.
Conclusion: Although all the samples were sensitive to vancomycin, but the mis use of this drug could led to some resistance in future.
