Abstract: 

Nitric Oxide (NO) decomposition over three catalysts supported on synthesized ZSM-5 zeolites and MCM-41 molecular sieves was investigated in a packed bed tubular reactor. Synthesized zeolite supported catalysts were prepared using ion-exchange and incorporation methods with copper during zeolite or molecular sieve synthesis procedures. Although Cu -ZSM-5 zeolites alone and a mixture of copper ion-exchanged ZSM-5 zeolite and MCM-41 molecular sieves were active, Cu-MCM-41 was not active for direct decomposition of NO. The mixture exhibited equal or higher activity in comparison with the Cu -ZSM-5 zeolite with a higher copper loading in the temperature range of 250-650 °c. This catalyst was not deactivated at temperatures up to 650 °c.
Up to 90% conversion was achieved over this catalyst when propene was used as a reducing agent, but methane did not have a positive effect on NO conversion into N2 when oxygen was present.
