Abstract: 
Hardness measurements have been used to determine the maximum amount of SiC that can be added homogeneously to aluminium using a double pressing - double sintering method. The wear behavior of the composites was studied using a pin-on-disc type machine. Large amounts of SiC exhibited high wear resistances. Data from compression and tensile tests are also reported for composites having 0-30 wt % SiC reinforcement. Optical microscopy was carried out on all the Al-SiC composites to examine the distribution of the reinforced particles. XRD and EDAX analyses have been used to reveal if any unwanted phases were obtained in the composite materials as a result of the unusual double pressing double sintering production process.
