Abstract:

An initial knowledge of range quality is essential for determining rangeland grazing capacity, and for sustainable range management. For this aim a study was designed in which changes in forage quality of some dominant range plants (Salsola rigida, Stipa barbata, Artemisia sieberi) were measured for a three years period (1999-2001). The study was conducted in Nir research station, Posht-kooh area, Yazd Province. Range forage was harvested six times a year, with monthly intervals from mid-May to mid-September. For each stage, current year forage was hand-clipped within 40, 2m2 quadrates. The percent of crude protein, calcium, phosphorus, mineral elements and total metabolic energy were considered as indices of forage quality. The percent of crude protein was calculated by multiplying Nitrogen amount on a coefficient (6.25). Nitrogen amount in dry matter was measured by Kjeldehal method. Metabolic energy in forage dry matter was estimated using equations proposed by Oddy, et al. (1981) and then by equation proposed by Australian Committee of Agriculture (1991). Total minerals, calcium and phosphorus were measured by AOAC method (1990). According to the results, highest forage quality was in May, which was decreased gradually towards the end of growth season (October). Rate of change in forage quality was dependent on plant species and year of study nevertheless, as forage quality does; but it was varied across different plant species. It appears that the current laboratory measurements may not give an exact estimation of forage used by livestock, because animals (here goat) usually select the high quality parts of forage.
