AN EVALUATION OF DROUGHT STRESS DURING GENERATIVE GROWTH STAGES ON SEED VIGOR OF HULLED AND HULL-LESS BARELY (HORDEUM VULGARE L.) CULTIVARS

Abstract: 
Water stress is one of the most important impeding factors in arid and semi arid lands. Water stress during seed development can severely and adversely affect seed growth and development. Water stress affects the relationship between sink and source which ultimately reduces the seed quality. This study was conducted at the experimental farm and laboratory of College of Agriculture, Tehran University in 2003. The experimental design was a split plot one based on a randomized complete block with four replications. Three irrigation regimes during seed development namely ceased irrigation at anthesis, milk)' seed, dough seed stages along with control (normal irrigation) were assigned to the main plots, while four barley cultivars, assigned to the sub plots. Seeds were harvested at 5 intervals from 20 days after anthesis. The quality of seed was evaluated using different laboratory tests. The results showed that water stress had a significant effect on germination percentage, mean time to germination, germination rate, plumule length, vigor index, seedling dry weight as well as electrical conductivity. Seed vigor in hulled cultivars was more pronounced than in hull-less cultivars. There was a positive con-elation observed between thousand seed weight (TSW) and plumule length, seedling dry weight, as well as vigor index, in control. Electrical conductivity was shown to be a proper index for predicting mean time to germination in control as well as germination percent in either water limited (anthesis) or in control treatments.
