Abstract: 

Iron, the 26th element in the periodic table, is widely distributed in the earth and arguably one of the most interesting elements. In this research, a PVC membrane electrode for Iron (H) ions based on N-phenylaza-15-crown-5 as neutral carrier was prepared. The electrode exhibits a Nemstian response for Fe2+ions over a wide concentration range (1.0 x 10-6 to 1.0 x 10-2 mol dm-3) with a slope of 29.2±0.7 mV/ decade. It has a short response time (£15s) and can be used for more than two months without any considerable divergence in the potentials. The results show that this electrode can be used in ethanol/ water and dioxane/ water mixed solvents media until 20% (V/V) and 5% (V/V) volume percent. The complex formation constant between ionophore and iron (II) ions was measured. The selectivity coefficients for iron (II) ions as test species with respect to diverse ions were determined. The electrode was applied to the determination of iron (II) ions in the ferrous sulfate syrup.
