CORROSION AND SCALING ANALYSIS OF WATER SUPPLY AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IN ZANJAN

Abstract: 

Water is essential to life and human beings need high-quality water in sufficient amounts to survive. One of the parameters that are considered in water quality assessment is corrosion and scaling conditions. Corrosion can cause gradual destruction to a part of a metal which is in contact with water. Scaling, however, can cause the formation of scales in the piping system and thus may reduce the water transfer capacity.
In this research, Zanjan water supply and distribution system has been studied for corrosion and scaling. 127 samples from water wells, water storage tanks, and the distribution system were taken in three seasons: fall, winter and spring. All samples were taken by grab. For the determination of Langelier and Rizener indices, such parameters as temperature, pH, alkalinity, Calcium hardness, and conductivity were examined. The results showed that the average Langelier and Rizener indices for the city of Zanjan were -0.08 and 7.27, respectively. The results also revealed that 53.51 percent of the samples were corrosive and 45.7 percent could form scales. The rest of the samples were neutral.
