Abstract: 

Protection of systems equipped with power semiconductors against over-voltage has an important role on increasing their reliabilities. In this paper, a novel circuit is presented for protecting series connected thyristors against over-voltage. ‏‏The simulation results which carried using SPICE software have confirmed the performance of the circuit. The main advantages of the proposed circuit over other protection methods are high reliability, no need to auxiliary supply and lower costs. The experimental results on a three-phase high voltage high power 15kV/3MW controlled rectifier equipped with this circuit have shown appropriate performance of the system.
