Abstract: 
containerized transportation is undoubtedly one of the factors of transportation development and its enhanced speed in the world of today and its position is not only stable in the shipping industry, but it is also growing fast.However, the problem not solved in this relation up until today is that of the empty containers due to commodity import-export imbalance in all the ports throughout the world, but the success of these ports to reduce this phenomenon is different. Effort has been made in this paper to address the empty containers’ repositioning problem considering the high importance of empty containers issue as regards maintenance costs, loading and unloading, insufficient area/storage facilities in the importation ports on the one hand, and the costs ofthe missed opportunities, customers’dissatisfaction, andthe economic dependence on other countries’ exportation ports facing shortage of empty containers on the other. Accordingly, the empty containers transportation planning model has been proposed in this research aiming at minimizing the total costs of transportation, storage, shortage, and loading/unloading of empty containers through considering the shortage and inventory levels simultaneously.The proposed model’s numerical experiments have been validated in the GAMS Software environment through a linear programming approach considering a spatiotemporal network of Iran ports as a real network for studying the problem of the repositioning of empty containers.The computational results have shown the effectiveness of the proposed model in balancing the empty containers’shortage level in the network ports, 41.2% reduction in the overall cost compared with that in the real situation, and optimization of the predefined goals.
