Abstract: 

Since the second half of the 20th century the role of cognitive variables in learning have been identified. One of these variables is learning method. Each person has their own methods of learning. One of these various methods is background-independent and background-dependent method of learning. In this research, in order to study the effect of the above mentioned learning method on the academic achievement of Payame Noor students, group figures test has been given to 450 students. The findings reject the research hypothesis. That is, the background-independent and background-dependent learning method does not have a significant effect on academic achievements of the students. The results were different from those of Diaz (1999) and Fan (1999), but conforms to those of Emamipour (2003), O’brien et al., (1998) and Blagg (1985). The above mentioned non-conformity indicates the complexity of the subject.
