ASSESSMENT OF ABSORBED DOSE OF STAFF IN SHAHID CHAMRAN AND NOOR HOSPITAL AND THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE RECEIVED DOSE

Abstract: 

Inrtroduction. Due to the wide usages of angiography and probability of high level of absorbed dose during the operation by medical staff, the assessment of the absorbed dose of the staff during the operation and comparing it with the dose limits defined by the ICRP (International Comminssion on Radiologyical Protection) is vital.
Methods. In order to determine the absorbed dose by the staff of the angiopraphy departments, We assessed all of the staffs in two hospitals of Isfahan. To measure dose, TLD cards containing CaS04 detectors were used. we used two TLDs for each person on waist and thyroid for a month. The mean absorbed doses of the two sensitive parts of the body were recorded. To read the data from TLDs, a TLD reader (Solaro2A) was used.
Results. The mean of monthly absorbed dose of the thyroid under the collar for the group of physicians was 26±36.9 mrad and on the gonads under the apron was 14.6± 15.3 mrad. For the group of nurses and radiology technicians on thyroid under the collar was 16.8±18.6 mrad and on gonads under the apron was 13.5±12.3 mrad. Its founded that the mean of absorbed dosefor each angiography for the group of physicians on thyroid was 3.61 ±3.32 mrad and on waist position, 2.07 ±2.31 mrad and for group of nurses and radiology technicians on thyroid was 1.16±1.09 mrad and on waist position was 1.49±2.22 mrad.
Discussion. Using the t-test (confidence interval=90%) showed that, the mean monthly absorbed dose of the thyroid of both groups of Chamran and Noor hospitals were higher than the absorbed dose of the waist (gonads). Usig the same test (confidence interval=90%) showed that, the mean nonthly absorbed dose of the physicians in both sites (thyroid and waist), despite, shorter presence in the angiography room and section was higher compared to the other staffs (nurses and radiology technicians). Comparing the absorbed dose of staff with the ICRP dose limits showed that, the mean absorbed dose of staff in both hospitals is lower than the recommended doses by the ICRP.
