Abstract:

This paper deals comparatively with the definition and explanation of faith in Mulla Sadra and Kierkegaard’s philosophy.
Remarking some ideas of contemporary western and Muslim philosophers about faith, the author recognized at least three approaches to the issue corresponding to different dimensions of it; rationalistic, fideistic and a combined one. At first approach, the emphasis is on cognitive dimension of faith and it is important to have some proof for the articles of faith.
At the second approach, practical dimension of faith is the most important part of it and its cognitive dimension, crucially or even wholly denied, so as the attempt to rationalize the faith is regarded as detrimental to it.
At the third approach different dimensions of faith, considered as the necessary elements of a unified activity, have been emphasized.
Mulla Sadra and Kierkegaard's opinions about faith and its relationship with   knowledge, emotion, will, deed, certainty and impossible things, are discussed in the light of three mentioned approaches to deal with faith.
