Abstract:

Aging is a physiologic process and urinary incontinence is one of the most common diseases and problems in elderly period that is related to pelvic muscle weakness and leads to physical, financial, social and mental complications. This study was a quasi – experimental study that was performed with the aim of studying the effect of pelvic muscle exercises (Kegel) on urinary incontinence in 30 patients hospitalized at Gharazi & Emam Reza hospital. At the first visit, a comprehensive medical history, physical examination, diagnostic tests (U/A, U/C etc.) and genital examination were done by the researchers and hospital nurses and a questionnaire was completed for each patient. Then, they were educated about pelvic muscle exercises using pictures and a pamphlet. These exercises consisted of a series of 5 second contractions followed by 10 second relaxations to be performed 60 times a day (40 days). They were assessed weekly. At the end of the therapeutic program, the questionnaires were completed again.  The results showed that 66.6% of patients were male and 70% of them were in the 50 to 70 years age group. The most common signs were urgency, involuntary wetting on sneezing and wetting themselves before reaching the toilet. These signs decreased in the post education period. This difference was significant from the statistical point of view (p<0.05). Results showed that pelvic muscle exercises can be one of the most effective therapeutic methods for treating urinary incontinence patients.
