Abstract:

Over the centuries, calligraphy and script have played special role in the decoration of religious buildings such as mosques and holy Islamic mausoleum. Moreover, Banaei script (Mosaic Script), the Arabic script inspired from Kufi, in harmony with the superficies of the monuments and the applied material all together have created a special unique effect in their inscriptions and decorations as well.
The various styles of Mosaic Script combined with the broken and geometric lines have shaped beautiful inscriptions containing Quranic Ayat, the Prophet speeches, the holy names of divine and Imams, and also Persian poetry in the form of geometric shapes such as shimsah (roundel shapes), square and diamond. Hakim Mosque in Isfahan is one of the beautiful and lasting examples belonged to the 11th/17th century in which Mosaic Script has been widely used.
Reviewing the inscriptions and decorations of propylaea, balconies and small semi-balconies and around the courtyard the court, under the Moqarnas of the dome ceiling and Ivans and the indoor and outdoor overhangs of the mosque’s porches; various styles of Mosaic Script (Banaei script) are observed such as simple, complicated, embedded and glazed.
This approach, combined with the style of the glazed brickwork and tiles have created unique decorations. Majority of inscriptions are implemented using different combinations of simple and glazed Banaei scripts.
