Abstract

The purpose of this study was to standardize and to examine validity and reliability of the Conners' Parent Rating Scales for children in elementary schools in Shiraz. 598 students (292 girls and 306 boys) aged 6 to 11 years were recruited using stratified sampling based on age and sex. The scale was translated and adapted for use in Iran. A pilot study was conducted to verify translation and adaptation of the scale for use in Iran. Factor analysis using principle component analysis followed by varimax rotation led to 4 factors including: conduct problems, social problems, anxious-shy and psychosomatic problems. Reliability of the scale was assessed using different methods. Test-retest reliability and Cronbach's alpha coefficient were .58 and.73 for the total score. Inter-rater correlations were assessed for mothers' and fathers' ratings and significant but low to moderate correlations were obtained. Finally there was no significant difference between two age groups using student t-tests. Also significant difference was not found between boys and girls in total scores but boys had significantly higher scores in conduct problems and girls had significantly higher scores in anxious-shy problems. Raw scores were transferred to T scores with a mean of 50 and standard deviation of 10 for the total scores and subscales.
