Abstract: 

C - band Patterns and karyology are discussed for two Iranian species of Fritillaria subgenus petilium. F. imperialis and F. raddeana. All populations showed a similar somatic chromosome number (2n=24). The karyotype formula for F. imperialis was 2n=2x= 24= 4m+8t+ 12st and for F. raddeana was 2n=2x= 24= 4m + 2sm + 8t + 10st. The bands were few and located at intercalary, telomeric, centromeric and rarely secondary constriction regions.
F. raddeana differs from F.imperialis in the possession of SAT - submetacentric chromosome, white thick subtelomeric heteromorphic band in their short arms, adjacent to the satellite. Further aspects of banding patterns, band heteromorphy, chromocenters and the role of C- banding in cytotaxonomy are discussed.
